Westport Unveils H2 HPDI™ Fuel System for Sustainable Hydrogen Internal Combustion Mobility at IAA

Westport Fuel Systems Inc. has announced its new H2 HPDI fuel system. For the first time in Europe, Westport will showcase its H2 HPDI fuel system-equipped demo truck at IAA Transportation 2022 in Hannover, Germany, September 20-25, 2022. The H2 HPDI is designed for use in internal combustion engines. The system, when powered by hydrogen, delivers more power and torque than diesel while significantly reducing emissions. Westport’s H2 HPDI fuel system offers the following benefits: Up to 20% more power than diesel; Up to 18% more torque than diesel; Almost zero CO2 emissions; Preserves existing diesel engine architecture; Preserves existing engine manufacturing infrastructure and investments; The lowest cost to achieve CO2 compliance.

Decarbonizing Europe: The European Union has set a target date of 2050 to achieve its carbon neutrality target, and hydrogen fuel in the heavy-duty vehicle sector should play an important role in this decarbonization strategy. According to data from the European Commission, around 20% of the future global transport fuel mix will come from H2, with a further 20% made up of low-carbon synthetic fuels derived from H2. Westport’s HPDI H2 fuel system offers a cost effective solution that delivers near zero CO2 emissions.

OEMs will be able to continue using existing internal combustion engines by fueling them with hydrogen, leveraging their investment in vehicle driveline design, supply chain and manufacturing. Engines equipped with this fuel system provide superior performance over spark ignition H2 ICE systems and diesel engines, including higher efficiency and power density as well as lower operating cost. Over a heavy duty cycle, the H2 HPDI fuel system should meet or exceed the performance and efficiency provided by fuel cells.

Less investment, better performance: game changer, without the change: H2 HPDI uses existing manufacturing infrastructure, a key factor in the short-term adoption of sustainability solutions. Minimizing public and private investment on the path to decarbonization is key to Westport’s ability to deliver real change quickly. This allows OEMs to make a big shift in their offering, a win-win situation for the industry and the environment.

The hydrogen-powered H2 HPDI achieves greater performance improvements by leveraging Westport’s experience with its HPDI LNG fuel system, on the road today. Westport’s HPDI LNG fuel system offers OEMs the flexibility to easily differentiate their natural gas and biogas product lines while maintaining full compatibility with conventional engines and powertrain lines.

An engine equipped with an HPDI LNG fuel system, fueled with a mixture of 60% natural gas including 40% biogas, offers the same life cycle CO2 reductions as fuel cells using hydrogen mixtures Blue green. It can also deliver net-zero well-to-wheel CO2 emissions with 100% biogas, which is becoming the predominant fuel for LNG trucks in many parts of Europe.
