VANCOUVER, British Columbia and HANNOVER, Germany, Sept. 16, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Westport Fuel Systems Inc. (“Westport“or the”Company”) (TSX: WPRT / Nasdaq: WPRT) today announced its new H2 HPDI fuel system. For the first time in Europe, Westport will display its H2 Demonstration truck fitted with an HPDI fuel system at IAA Transportation 2022 in Hannover, Germany, September 20-25, 2022. H2 HPDI is designed for use in internal combustion engines. The system, when powered by hydrogen, delivers more power and torque than diesel while significantly reducing emissions. H of Westport2 The HPDI fuel system offers the following benefits:

The European Union has set a deadline of 2050 to achieve its carbon neutrality objective, and hydrogen fuel in the heavy-duty vehicle sector should play an important role in this decarbonization strategy. According to data from the European Commission, around 20% of the future global transport fuel mix will come from H2 with an additional 20% composed of low carbon synthetic fuels derived from H2.

OEMs will be able to continue using existing internal combustion engines by fueling them with hydrogen, leveraging their investment in vehicle driveline design, supply chain and manufacturing. Engines equipped with this fuel system provide superior performance over spark-ignition Hs.2 ICE systems and diesel engines, including greater efficiency and power density as well as lower operating cost. Westport’s HPDI LNG fuel system offers OEMs the flexibility to easily differentiate their natural gas and biogas product lines while maintaining full compatibility with conventional engines and powertrain lines. An engine equipped with an HPDI LNG fuel system, fueled with a mixture of 60% natural gas including 40% biogas, offers the same life cycle of CO2 such as fuel cells using blue/green hydrogen mixtures. It can also provide net zero CO from well to wheels2 emissions, with 100% biogas becoming the predominant fuel for LNG trucks in many parts of Europe.
